What Udyam Registration Is
Udyam Registration is the current official process through which a business registers itself as a Micro, Small, or Medium Enterprise (MSME) with the Ministry of MSME, Government of India. It replaced the earlier Udyog Aadhaar registration system, and a business must be registered under Udyam to be formally recognised as an MSME for government purposes.
How MSMEs Are Classified
MSME classification is based on two criteria: the enterprise’s investment in plant and machinery/equipment, and its annual turnover. Based on these two figures, a business is classified as Micro, Small, or Medium — the specific investment and turnover thresholds for each category are set by the government and have been revised over time, so checking the current thresholds on the official portal rather than relying on an old figure is important.
Why Udyam Registration Matters
Registered MSMEs become eligible for a range of government support measures, which can include priority sector lending consideration from banks, protection against delayed payments from buyers under the MSME Development Act, easier access to certain government tenders, and eligibility for various MSME-specific schemes (several of which, like PMEGP, CGTMSE, or the NSIC Single Point Registration Scheme, are aimed specifically at registered MSMEs).
The Registration Process
Udyam Registration is done entirely online through the official Udyam portal, is free of cost, and is based on self-declaration — meaning the business owner enters their own business and financial details (verified in the background using PAN and GST data where applicable) rather than submitting physical documents for manual verification. Once registered, the enterprise receives a unique Udyam Registration Number and certificate.
Keeping Your Registration Updated
Since MSME classification depends on investment and turnover figures that change as a business grows, Udyam registration details should be updated to reflect the business’s current financial position — remaining registered under an outdated classification could affect eligibility for schemes tied to a specific MSME category.
