How This Conversion Works
Decimal degrees (like 28.6139) are the format used by most modern GPS devices, mapping APIs, and this site’s own coordinate tools. Degrees-minutes-seconds (like 28°36’50″N) is the traditional format still used on nautical charts, surveying documents, and some older GPS receivers. The conversion is exact: minutes and seconds are simply degrees split into 60ths and 3,600ths — decimal = degrees + minutes/60 + seconds/3600, negated for South or West.
FAQ
Which format should I use?
Decimal degrees is easier to type into most modern tools (including every other coordinate tool on this site). Use DMS only if a specific document, chart, or older device requires it.
Is my data uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion happens entirely in your browser using JavaScript — nothing you enter here is sent to our server.
Why do both results show at once?
This tool converts in both directions at the same time — fill in the DMS fields to get a decimal result, or the decimal field to get a DMS result, independently of each other.
