How This Calculation Works
This calculator raises the base to the power of the exponent — for example, 2 raised to the power of 10 is 1024. Negative and fractional (decimal) exponents are supported: a negative exponent gives the reciprocal (2^-2 = 1/4 = 0.25), and a fractional exponent is equivalent to a root (8^(1/3) is the cube root of 8, which is 2). Zero cannot be raised to a negative power, since that would require dividing by zero — the calculator flags this rather than showing an incorrect result.
FAQ
What does a negative exponent mean?
A negative exponent means “take the reciprocal”: x^-n = 1 / (x^n). For example, 5^-2 = 1 / 25 = 0.04.
What does a fractional exponent mean?
A fractional exponent represents a root. x^(1/2) is the square root of x, and x^(1/3) is the cube root of x.
