Understanding Screen Dimensions and Display Metrics

When you check screen size online, your browser analyzes several key display metrics. Understanding these values helps web developers, designers, and everyday users troubleshoot display scaling and layout issues.

What is screen resolution?

Screen resolution measures the total number of physical pixels your display shows, expressed as width × height (for example, 1920 × 1080). Consequently, a higher resolution places more pixels onto the screen, which makes text and images appear significantly sharper.

What is screen size?

“Screen size” can refer to two distinct measurements: the physical diagonal length of your monitor (measured in inches) or the resolution reported in CSS pixels. Browsers cannot reliably measure physical inches. Therefore, this tool reports digital resolution and viewport dimensions instead of guessing a physical inch measurement.

What is viewport size?

Your viewport represents the visible area of a web page inside your browser window. Usually, this area measures smaller than your full screen resolution because browser toolbars, tabs, and operating system taskbars occupy extra space.

What is device pixel ratio (DPR)?

Device Pixel Ratio describes the direct relationship between physical hardware pixels and CSS logical pixels. For example, a DPR of 2 means each CSS pixel renders using a 2×2 grid of physical pixels, which is standard on high-density Retina displays.

If you test web interfaces, you can also analyze layout elements using our Heading Analyzer or check metadata with our Meta Tag Analyzer.

What is the difference between resolution and viewport?

Screen resolution defines the maximum pixel capacity of your physical monitor. On the other hand, viewport size measures only the active browser window space available to render web content.

Why does my browser show a different resolution?

If a number here looks smaller than your monitor’s advertised resolution, it’s likely because your operating system is using display scaling (for example, 125% or 150%), or because the browser window isn’t maximized. Both are normal and expected.
