What a PAN Is Used For
A Permanent Account Number (PAN) is a unique alphanumeric identifier issued by the Income Tax Department, used to track financial transactions and tax-related activity linked to a person or entity. Beyond filing income tax returns, PAN is commonly required for opening a bank account, making certain high-value transactions, investing in mutual funds or securities, and other financial and regulatory processes.
Who Needs a PAN
Anyone earning taxable income in India is required to have a PAN, but in practice it’s widely needed even by individuals below the taxable threshold, since many everyday financial transactions and account-opening processes require it as an identity and transaction-tracking reference.
What Instant e-PAN Is
The Income Tax Department’s Instant e-PAN service lets eligible individuals — those who have a valid Aadhaar number linked to a mobile number — obtain a PAN online, without submitting physical documents, typically within a short time. The e-PAN issued this way is a valid, legally recognised PAN, just delivered digitally rather than as a physical card initially (a physical card can usually still be requested separately).
How Instant e-PAN Works
The process generally involves visiting the official Income Tax e-filing portal, entering your Aadhaar number, verifying via an OTP sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile number, and the system then generates your e-PAN using your existing Aadhaar details — since your PAN details are derived directly from your Aadhaar record, they must already be accurate and up to date on Aadhaar itself.
Keeping Your PAN Details Correct
Because a mismatch between your PAN and Aadhaar details (like a misspelled name or wrong date of birth) can cause problems with tax filing or PAN-Aadhaar linking, it’s worth double-checking your Aadhaar details are accurate before applying for an Instant e-PAN based on them.
