How This Works
Geohash is an open, public-domain system (created by Gustavo Niemeyer) for encoding a location into a short string of letters and digits — commonly used in databases and APIs for efficient location-based lookups. Longer Geohash strings represent smaller, more precise areas. This tool implements the algorithm directly from its published specification.
FAQ
Why does decoding give a slightly different coordinate than I encoded?
A Geohash represents a small rectangular area, not an exact point — decoding returns the center of that area. Using more characters (higher precision) shrinks the area and reduces this difference.
Is my data uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion happens entirely in your browser — nothing you enter here is sent to our server.
