SQL Formatter

Format, beautify, validate and minify SQL online directly in your browser. Fast, private and free — your SQL never leaves your device and is never executed.

Developer ToolsFormatterSQL

Paste SQL below to instantly format, validate, or minify it. Everything runs in your browser — nothing you enter here is uploaded, stored, logged, or executed.

Your SQL is processed locally in your browser and is not uploaded to our server. It is never executed.

How to Use

  1. Paste or type your SQL into the input panel.
  2. Click Format / Beautify for readable, indented SQL, Minify for a smaller whitespace/comment-free output, or Validate to check that strings, quoted identifiers, comments, and parentheses are all properly closed.
  3. Use Copy Output or Download to take the result with you.

This Tool Never Executes Your SQL

This is a text formatter, not a database client. There is no database connection anywhere in this tool, your query is never run against anything, and it is never sent to our server in any form — it is only ever read and rewritten as plain text, entirely inside your own browser.

What This Formatter Actually Supports

This is a generic, cross-dialect SQL formatter — not a parser for any single database engine’s exact grammar, and not a validator of query correctness. It recognizes the syntax common to MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQL Server, and SQLite: single-quoted string literals, double-quoted or backtick-quoted identifiers, -- line comments, /* */ block comments, and the standard clause keywords (SELECT, FROM, WHERE, GROUP BY, ORDER BY, HAVING, JOIN variants, UNION, INSERT INTO, UPDATE, DELETE FROM, WITH, and CASE/WHEN/THEN/ELSE/END). It does not specifically implement dialect extensions such as PostgreSQL’s $$-quoted function bodies or T-SQL’s [bracketed identifiers].

How Formatting Works

  • Clause keywords (SELECT, FROM, WHERE, GROUP BY, and so on) and JOINs always start a new line. ON, and AND/OR inside the current clause, are indented one level deeper.
  • A subquery — a ( immediately followed by SELECT or WITH — is fully formatted on its own, nested one indent level deeper, with its closing ) on its own line. This is the one nested structure this tool fully supports.
  • Every other parenthesis — a function call, an IN (...) list, an INSERT INTO table (col1, col2) column list, or a CREATE TABLE (...) definition list — is kept on one line, however long. Correctly deciding when a list like that “should” wrap needs real SQL grammar this tool doesn’t implement; keeping it inline is always structurally safe, so that’s the deliberate trade-off made here.
  • Keyword casing is left exactly as you typed it — this tool never uppercases or lowercases anything.
  • Multiple statements separated by ; are each formatted and separated by a blank line.

FAQ

Is my SQL uploaded anywhere?

No. Formatting, validating, and minifying all happen locally in your browser using native JavaScript. Your SQL is never sent to our server.

Does this tool execute my SQL?

No, never. There is no database connection in this tool at all — it only ever reads and rewrites your SQL as text.

Which SQL syntax is supported?

See “What This Formatter Actually Supports” above — the syntax common across MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQL Server, and SQLite, not every dialect-specific extension.

Can I format multiple SQL statements at once?

Yes. Statements separated by semicolons are each formatted and separated by a blank line.

Can I format INSERT, UPDATE, and DELETE queries, not just SELECT?

Yes — INSERT INTO, UPDATE/SET, and DELETE FROM are all recognized clause keywords.

Can I use SQL comments?

Yes. Both -- line comments and /* */ block comments are preserved when formatting or validating, and removed when minifying.

Does it connect to my database?

No. There’s no database connection field anywhere in this tool because it never needs one — it only ever formats text.

Is there a size limit?

There’s no artificial limit, but very large input is bound by your browser’s own memory and performance, since everything runs client-side.

Do I need an account?

No. The tool is free to use and doesn’t require sign-up.
