How This Calculation Works
This calculator finds the nth root of a number — the value which, multiplied by itself n times, gives the original number. A negative number only has a real nth root when the degree is an odd whole number (for example, the cube root of -8 is -2, since -2 × -2 × -2 = -8); for an even degree, a negative number has no real-number root, and the calculator explains this rather than showing an incorrect result.
FAQ
Why can’t I take the square root of a negative number?
No real number multiplied by itself gives a negative result (a negative times a negative is always positive), so a negative number has no real square root.
